Zig Zag House

The house design utilises the steep site to harmonize with the natural landscape. Two rectangular side sections provide private living spaces, while the central portion connects to the outdoors. A partially covered deck extends living space and encourages interaction with the serene environment. The garden courtyard at the entry enhances the indoor-outdoor transition, allowing for smooth movement and light. This layout promotes privacy in the sides and communal interaction centrally, aligning with the land's contours and the views of mature vegetation and Horsfield Bay.

Winter sun penetrates deep into the footprint of the building via the central external space and the skylights above the living area which are formed by an extension of the 'zig-zag' structure.

Steel trusses are visually expressed within the walls of the house to make the triangular lines that give the house its name while also providing the structure required to lightly support the house above the steep topography.

Openings are designed to enhance indoor-outdoor relationships. This placement invites the bay and bush beauty indoors, creating a tranquil refuge for relaxation. The central area fosters social interaction while ensuring seclusion, balancing connection and privacy to create a harmonious living space.
