The project enhances the interwar bungalow while preserving its character in the heritage conservation area. Key objectives include respecting the original architectural style and removing the incongruous upper-level addition to create a cohesive façade. A new rear extension will provide modern living space without compromising historical features. Materials will be carefully selected to complement the original structure, using natural timber and stone for a seamless transition. Large windows in the extension will increase natural light and outdoor connectivity. Landscaping will incorporate native planting and restore garden elements, enhancing the heritage character and providing a tranquil setting. This update maintains the bungalow's historical value while meeting contemporary needs, contributing to the North Shore's architectural narrative.

“It seemed to be that every time we came across a house renovation we particularly admired, it had been designed by Castlepeake. They understood our brief and developed innovative floor plans that increased light penetration whilst keeping within the building footprint. Our century old Californian bungalow received a well-deserved makeover with the perfect blend of modern and old. The team at Castlepeake assisted every step of the way from concept, detailed design phase to construction and completion.”

A significant move was the relocation of the stairs to the upper level. These have been positioned to allow light to flood into the ground level via a generous void, with large skylights in the roof above, and the additional benefit of a visual link and airflow between the ground and upper levels.

Modifications to the ground level allow reconfigured living spaces to open out to the existing rear deck and pool. A new curved roof over the deck breaks down the scale of the two storey rear façade and wraps around to provide shelter at the new entry point, which itself offers a glimpse of the character of the modern rear additions when viewed from the street.
