Kurraba House

The house design maximises its stunning location while adhering to strict heritage regulations. It respects the surrounding architecture and is oriented to enhance views of Cremorne Point and the tidal bay. Large windows create a strong indoor-outdoor connection, and materials reflect the local landscape. The structure's height and mass are carefully managed to minimise visual impact and preserve the conservation area. The design prioritises sustainability, energy efficiency, and low maintenance, aiming to contribute positively to the community and honour its natural beauty and heritage.

“Castlepeake designed a beautiful family home which in many ways exceeded our expectations. We were particularly impressed by the attention to detail and quality finishes. Mark’s calm demeanor was able to manage what at times was a complex process.”

The existing house was renovated to respond to these contextual elements while providing the spatial programme required by the owners. Internally, spaces are both horizontally and vertically expansive to take in views and sunlight and relate easily to the street above and the site below.

The thoughtful placement of openings and the use of large windows maximise visual connections to the courtyard, facilitating a dynamic relationship between the indoor and outdoor environments. Plantings within the courtyard can be chosen to enhance the sensory experience—incorporating textures, colours, and scents that change with the seasons.

Design principles emphasise the importance of outdoor spaces in promoting well-being and comfort for the occupants. By creating a seamless transition between the interior and exterior, the courtyard serves as a focal point that encourages interaction with nature while providing a retreat from the urban landscape.
