Bay House

The site’s unique topography presents both challenges and opportunities for design. Its location at the end of a narrow access lane introduces considerations for accessibility and service routes, necessitating thoughtful planning to ensure efficient movement for both construction and client.

The steep terrain can be transformed into a dynamic architectural feature, allowing for terraced designs or stepped structures that embrace the natural landscape. The uninterrupted views of Woodford Bay, the Harbour Bridge, and the city skyline should be maximised, calling for large, strategically placed windows and outdoor spaces that invite you to engage with the stunning vistas.

Incorporating landscaping that complements the natural surroundings was also essential in softening the building’s presence against the dramatic backdrop. Sustainable design practices were considered to mitigate the site’s challenges, such as erosion or runoff, while enhancing the overall ecological footprint of the development.

“Castlepeake’s inspiration and attention gave us the 'forever home' we were seeking. They listened and understood how we wanted to live. Their design is elegant simplicity: useful spaces, great finishes, comfortable in all seasons, a showpiece for our wonderful views of the harbour and city, yet somehow private. Castlepeake captured our tastes and aspirations, with insight into our evolving needs…”

The main living level is elongated to the north and south, cantilevering from the existing masonry base below it so that views to the east are maximised. It is pulled away from the structure to the west to create a sunny and protected courtyard adjacent to the main living space.

The alignment of this protected area continues southwards through the house to include stairs and an internal courtyard which provide light deep into the inside of the house.

The roofs are landscaped to provide interest from above and a lap pool is elevated above the ground to be level with the bedroom and rumpus areas. In addition to providing the normal amenity of a pool, its form completes the horizontal composition of the house.
